"Seeking to remove the obstacles that limit student achievement, I draw from my personal experiences to describe my vision for the future of public education – rejecting the status quo to empower individual systems, schools, teachers, students, and communities to achieve educational excellence." -Casey Cagle
“We know that all students in Georgia are capable of imagining a rewarding future and dream of living with purpose, and it is disappointing to me that the American Dream is often talked about as something that’s not attainable for everybody…
If someone doubts that the children living in poverty in each of Georgia’s 159 counties have dreams they want to dedicate themselves to pursuing, and which they have the potential to realize, then that person is choosing to ignore reality for the purpose of fulfilling a stereotype. People everywhere can and should be able to achieve their dreams.
But the American Dream has always gone further to represent our nation’s optimism for the future.”
Raised by a single mother, who fought to keep her family out of poverty – she instilled in Casey a love of God, the value of hard work, and the importance of perseverance. Despite his mom’s hard work, even the money from her two jobs was barely enough to make ends meet, and by the time he reached the sixth grade, Casey had attended eight different elementary schools. However, his mom did not give up – making every effort to provide her family with better opportunities.
Casey credits the education he received in Georgia’s public schools for his success. Because he was fortunate to have opportunities to work in his community, Casey became an entrepreneur and small business owner at twenty-one years of age. Without a doubt, Casey is living proof that the American Dream is real. In Education Unleashed, he offers a roadmap that will allow all of our citizens to achieve personal significance and the same opportunities that allowed him to rise above the circumstances in which he was born.
Today, Casey serves as Georgia’s 11th Lieutenant Governor. He has been recognized for his work to champion Charter School Systems, Georgia’s College and Career Academies, the German American Apprenticeship Program, and Lieutenant Governor’s Healthy Kids Challenge – bringing resources together to make public schools more accountable and effective for students and communities as a whole.
